Vixen, Heroine of Solé

Book Overview

A dangerous, masked usurper. Threats of war from the oppressed. A magical girl’s belief system upended. And one hypoglycemic wolfy boi.™

Copied from VHoS’s query letter:

On the surface, all seems well on the continent of Melodia and its nine queendoms. Ever since Harmony, the goddess of the land, sent Her magical warrior Heroines to topple a dictator, Melodia has strictly adhered itself to Her religion. The century-old theocracy has led to endless peace and prosperity…for those in positions of power and privilege, that is. Those on the margins who speak the truth about their oppression are shunned and silenced—and Harmony has had enough.

Enter nineteen-year-old Vixen DuRenard, a resident of the queendom of Solé anxiously looking to Harmony for career guidance. When Harmony shows Vixen a bleak vision of Solé’s future instead—complete with violence, black magic, and a coup—Vixen takes the opportunity to become Solé’s newest Heroine, tasked with preventing the upheaval with light magic and a sword. Having been taught to consult Harmony on all important matters, Vixen eagerly awaits a directive on how to neutralize this new threat. And waits…and waits…

While Vixen continues to beg for divine instructions, the usurper known as Lady Amethyst kidnaps the queendom’s Prophets, preventing the next queen of Solé from assuming the throne. One of the most prominent families in Solé are accused of the crime…which just happens to include Vixen’s battle partner Grayson. If that wasn’t enough, the witches in society threaten to join Lady Amethyst to destroy the monarchy, sick to death of their persecution. The only solution to fixing all of this seems to be using a volatile divine crystal that might kill Vixen on impact, a choice that haunts the Heroine. And all the while, Vixen spirals as she learns that not everything she believes in is correct, or even healthy…What’s a Heroine to do?

Characters

Harmony—The charismatic, music-and-deer-themed goddess who creates Heroines. She is actually an ungendered Spirit, but appears in a feminine form for the heck of it. In VHoS, Harmony refuses to behave in the way Vixen believes She would—aka, perfectly dictating the Heroine of Solé’s every step, so that saving the queendom will be done “right” without angering or disappointing the goddess. Being left to her own devices, this—predictably—makes Vixen implode.

Vixen DuRenard—The half Soléan, half Genen girl who lobbies in Solé’s castle and dreams of becoming one of the queen’s Advisors one day. Or wait, scratch that…she now has to stop a coup d’état, somehow, with magic and a weapon she has no idea how to use. Oh, and work alongside Grayson, which might be a wee bit hard because her crush on him is out of control.

Grayson KadriThe next leader of Solé’s Council and Vixen’s best friend, who is gifted the ability to shift into a large wolf by Harmony—just as his ancestors did. Even though he’s rich and very pretty, he’s really just a lovely goofball who should watch his blood sugar more often. And perhaps go to therapy more. There’s something sad about his eyes…

Zipporah Giordano—The youngest Advisor to the queen and Vixen’s mentor and friend in the castle. Zipporah’s face and demeanor is permanently set to somewhere between You bore me and I’ll kill you, but this fazes Vixen none. She becomes the interim queen while the search is on for the Prophets, though most of her time is spent telling Vixen not to get in trouble or hurt. What a prickly pear.

Beatrix Balotelli—Some witch living in the village of Barlume. We don’t associate with witches in Harmony’s land.

Lady Amethyst—Or better known as ???, because who knows who this all-black wearing, Prophet-kidnapping, black magic-using insurrectionist is. Grayson and Vixen chose the nickname because of the purple black magic crystals she uses. It’s a pretty dumb nickname.
